Mountain Lion Mystery

Well, 2007 is just starting and already there is a report of a Mountain Lion sighting near Cedar Run. Currently, there is an attempt to verify this sighting by getting a picture and/or track cast of the suspect.

Last year, a mountain lion was seen killing a deer along the bike trail by a trail worker. The DCNR would not verify this, claiming the bite marks on the deer were too large for a bobcat and too small for a mountain lion. Could it be a young mountain lion? That will be a hard cookie to swallow for it would mean the mountain lions are breeding and then the State would have to implement a control program.

Identifying Mountain Lion Tracks
The mountain lion track on the left can be distinguished from the dog track on the right by the absence of toenail prints and by the “M” shaped pad.

If you see a mountain lion get a picture if possible or locate a track then email me. Do not endanger yourself to do this. Be respectful of this creature it is very capable of turning you into its next meal. Let's put this mystery to rest in 2007.
